Levon Helm

RIP. These are probably my two favorite songs by The Band. Both clips are from Martin Scorsese's doc, The Last Waltz. Levon Helm was quite a talent.

(Side note: I played trumpet on a version of "The Weight" in high school.)

Levon will indeed be missed. I'd like to mention that he was producing very inspired music right up to the end. His recent album, "Electric Dirt" was wonderful.

I wonder if the likes of Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga will be producing worthwhile music in their 70s.

I once read that a sure sign of middle age is when all new chart music sounds to sound like crap. But these days, it really IS crap.

On a number of occasions, I've talked to a high school kids who said that they don't even listen to new music and instead prefer music from the Beatles, Led Zep and Pink Floyd. Even a lot of young people these days hate the Top 40.

The crap that clogs up the music charts these days is just as much to blame for falling record sales as piracy is.

(OK, I will cut Adele some slack...she is pretty good. So is M.I.A.)
